Anyone grown mandarin oranges or tangerines in snowy climate outside, not in a greenhouse? Can it be done?
Cold weather is very hard on citrus. Most authorities on the subject suggest not even trying it. Big citrus areas, like Southern California go to great lengths to keep the trees from freezing on the few nights of the year it gets that cold. I have a dwarf blood orange that I have to protect from freezing where I am, and it never has produced great fruit - so sour we call it our blood lemon tree! I think it suffers just too much stress every winter. I've never heard of a citrus developed for colder climates. Good luck!
