When asked if killing at war is a sin ,christians answered yes, no or sometimes why?

is it that when christians are asked about killing and sin they quote "thou shalt not kill!" or an "eye for an eye!" they choose whichever quote is most convenient to them at the time, is this blatant hypocrisy?
